News from the frontier, 6/9/2007 (Masters, Atlantis, Spock)

Well, I'm still alive, so here we go again with another edition of Frontier News.
Perhaps "Masters" was the wrong word?
A long time ago in this very space, I talked about a limited-run ABC series called Masters of Science Fiction. The six episode anthology was to debut in January or February as a mid-season replacement.
You didn't see the show, either? That's because it still hasn't aired. ABC has finally placed it on its schedule, though. Only four of the episodes will actually air. Look for them in August, on Saturday nights at 10 PM. Sci Fi Wire called it a "death timeslot" and I'm inclined to agree.
Among the episodes is Harlan Ellison's "The Discarded," directed by Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation). "The Discarded" stars John Hurt (Alien, V for Vendetta) and Brian Dennehy (Jake Reed). The short story first appeared in 1959.
Slated to appear in other episodes are Malcolm McDowell (Star Trek Generations), James Cromwell (Star Trek: First Contact), Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Sam Waterston (Law & Order), and Anne Heche (Psycho [1998]).
Among the other authors whose work will be represented on the show are Robert Heinlein, Howard Fast, and Robert Sheckley. Real-life physicist-professor Stephen Hawking, who had a cameo in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Descent," will host the series.
No word yet on which four episodes will actually air.
Shuttle Atlantis roars into orbit
The United States Shuttle Atlantis blasted into orbit last night from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Check out the NASA site for information on this mission. If you missed the launch, you can also see it here.
Eventually, every episode has to be remastered
This weekend on Star Trek: Remastered, it's "Spock's Brain," which is often cited as the worst episode of the original series. I wish I could tell you that the crowd is wrong in this case, but this one really is bad. Though I wouldn't call it the worst episode, it definitely makes my bottom three. They can't all be winners.
Funny thing, though. Substitute "Katra" for "Brain" and don't you have Star Trek III: The Search for Spock?
