Trek reviews, Superman vs. Hollywood, etc. (News from the frontier, 10/12/2007)

Good evening friends. Lots of news tidbits tonight, so on with the show.

Various Star Trek reviews
Last week, Star Trek: The Next Generation-The Complete Series hit DVD shelves. If you already own the season sets from the original DVD release, is it worth a double-dip? Not according to Steve Fritz's review of the 49-disc set over on Newsarama.

Hitting bookshelves Tuesday is Star Trek: The Academy-Collision Course, the new hardcover by William Shatner with Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens. I used to love Star Trek novels back in my middle school and high school days. My favorite Trek authors were Diane Carey (Best Destiny), Margaret Wander Bonanno (Strangers From The Sky), and the Reeves-Stevens (Federation).

Somewhere in the 1990's, I stopped reading Trek novels. I don't know if they changed or I did. Perhaps a little of both. I made an exception for Shatner's first trilogy (The Ashes of Eden, The Return, Avenger), which was probably the last Star Trek fiction I truly enjoyed. I didn't even make it all the way through his second trilogy.

It intrigues me that he and his collaborators have finally written another Kirk novel outside of the TNG era, though. Reading about Kirk's adventures in the TNG era became tiring after awhile. I may pick this one up. Incidentally, it is the tenth Shatner/Reeves-Stevens Star Trek novel.

Jeff Ayers over at TrekWeb.com posted a negative review of Collision Course, even provoking a response from the Reeves-Stevens themselves.

If any fellow Kirk fans out there read the book, drop me a line here in the comments section or by e-mail and let me know what you think.

Every time I see the title Collision Course, I think of a really bad Jay Leno/Pat Morita movie from the 1980's. I've learned never to judge a book by its title, though. I'm just glad they didn't call it Cruise Control.

The Film Frontier's own JS recently posted a less than favorable review of issue 3 of the comic book series Star Trek: Year Four. Regarding a particularly bad portrayal of Kirk by writer David Tischman, JS noted, "Somehow, I think Picard might have rolled over for this, but not Kirk. Sorry, just not Kirk." The next issue goes on sale October 17.

Superman vs. Hollywood
Superman's history in Hollywood, whether we're talking the various television series or the movies, has certainly been a tumultuous one. Superman vs. Hollywood: How Fiendish Producers, Devious Directors, and Warring Writers Grounded an American Icon by Jake Rossen reportedly takes a behind-the-scenes look at the various productions, including Superman II and the various incarnations of Superman V leading up to Superman Returns.

Will this unauthorized book bring any new insight or just rehash old stories? I gotta say, the cutesy subtitle makes me less inclined to buy it. What was I just saying about not judging a book by its title? Anyway, the book is due out in February.

A random Star Wars link
I've made it pretty clear here that I'm against bashing George Lucas and that I actually enjoy the Star Wars prequel trilogy (the horror!). However, I recently came across a fun site that does a great job of picking the prequel movies apart without being downright nasty.

While I certainly don't agree with all of Chefelf's nitpicks, they are well thought out and presented in a way that is appealing to me as a Star Wars fan. Check it out over at The Nitpicker's Guide to Star Wars. Though the primary focus is the prequel trilogy, there are also a few nitpicks of the special edition versions of the original trilogy.

This weekend on Star Trek: Remastered
This weekend's episode of Star Trek: Remastered is "Dagger of the Mind." Check out the video preview over on StarTrek.com. Star Trek: Remastered airs each weekend in syndication. It features updated special effects and other enhancements to the original Star Trek series. (The Film Frontier's Related Articles)
