Star Trek XI movie news roundup, 11/11/2007

Filming began November 7 on Star Trek, the eleventh movie in the series. Two important casting decisions also made Star Trek XI news last week.
Bruce Greenwood will appear as Christopher Pike, who commanded the Enterprise prior to Kirk. Greenwood's previous films include I, Robot and Thirteen Days.
Jeffrey Hunter first played Pike in "The Cage," Star Trek's original pilot. Sean Kenney played a crippled Pike in "The Menagerie," which also incorporated Hunter's footage. Star Trek: The Menagerie, the remastered version of the two-part episode, hits theaters this week for a limited engagement.
Compared to Hunter, I'm not sure Greenwood has the right fire in his eyes to play Pike. Every time I watch 1994's Clear & Present Danger, I always think Henry Czerny would make a great Pike.
Playing Spock's human mother, Amanda, is Winona Ryder. Ryder's many films include Mr. Deeds, Alien Resurrection, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Edward Scissorhands, and Beetle Juice.
Jane Wyatt originated the role of Amanda in the 1967 episode "Journey to Babel." She reprised the part nearly twenty years later in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
