"Dr. McCoy, M.D. -- R.I.P."

I'll always remember De as being the lovable curmudgeon Dr. Bones McCoy. His friendly confrontations with Spock (Nimoy), His memorable phrases..."I'm a doctor, not a ......." And of course, "He's dead, Jim."
He was the "emotion" of the "trinity," Spock being the logic, and Kirk being risk-taker.
Someone said that De got his first real opportunity to act in Star Trek V when David McCoy died...I disagree. All throughout "Trek," De did a splendid job of acting...whether spouting off at Spock or offering Kirk a drink.
DeForest Kelley will be greatly missed.

It really doesn't seem like all that long ago really...Rather seems like yesterday, I used to watch you on TV. Has time gone that quickly? Why does it feel like I have lost an old friend?

For a person of only 18 years as I am, many of you will find it strange that I am more of a fan of the Original Series than any of the spin-offs. But you see, one of my earliest memories of any part of my life was all the pretty and bright colours of the people and sets of the original series of Star Trek. When I was a bit older, I began to watch the series properly. And no matter how much I watched, I always wanted more. In fact, it got to the point where I started writing my own fan fiction, all be it not exactly seriously. The crew of the original Enterprise have effectively been life long friends of mine. So when I heard of DeForest Kelley's death (which was rather poorly covered here in Scotland, much to my dismay) I really felt as though I had just lost a friend. I never knew DeForest Kelley, but I knew Leonard H. McCoy. And on June 11th 1999, both of them were gone forever, and with them went the Original Series of Star Trek. For without DeForest, McCoy would never be the same, and without McCoy, the original series would never be the same.
There was never a more true statement uttered than that by this very man - "He's really not dead, as long as we remember him." I will never forget.

Someone much wiser than I, remarked that while Spock was the "brains" of the Enterprise and Kirk was it's "soul", McCoy was surely the "heart". De's portrayal of McCoy communicated what we all need to remember and abide by : forgiveness, love, mercy, kindness all are lost without the ability to feel.
DeForest Kelley was, is, and always will be the epitome of grace and gentility. Good night sweet prince....rest easy among the stars.

DeForest Kelley, what can one say about a man who portrayed the dedicated and humane Dr. L. McCoy. We will miss him, however he is also with us forever.

Good-bye, DeForest Kelley, De, Leonard, Doctor, Dr. McCoy, "Bones," McCoy Son of David, you will be sorely missed. We shall all miss you. We all love you. You will always be remembered. We shall make it our personal mission to make sure you live on in the novels, and to make sure to read them. We all hoped that you would live to be "137 years, according to Starfleet Records." Good-bye old friend. LIVE LONG AND PROSPER.

McCoy,
He made me laugh. That chiseled warm smile that curled up at one side was never felt more by me than when, at the end of Star Trek II, he stood up at the rail, his eyes moist, and said: 'He's not really dead you know, as long as we remember him.' He is the first traveler of the major cast future to die in our time. A sense of loss now pervades my viewing pleasure whenever I watch the movies. He is gone, gone, but not forgotten.

And in his time, one man will play many parts."

So long, old friend.

My name's Kelly Crutcher and I'm a major Star Trek nut- Dr. McCoy was one of my favorite characters on the old series.
A couple of days after his death my grandmother called me and told me that she'd read about Mr. Kelley's passing in a newspaper; that he died of cancer- I was just in shock. I was sitting there at my computer, too shocked to even cry. I was able to cry a couple of days later, though.
At least now he isn't suffering anymore. It's still hard to believe that he's not with us.
As McCoy said: "He's really not dead, as long as we remember him." That's the truth. He may be gone from this world, but his memory will live on in our hearts.
I know his wife's heartbroken over her loss. Mrs. Kelley, I want to say that I share your pain. All of us do.
Rest In Peace, Bones.

Seems like only yesterday. . . . Now, even though a year has passed by, I still feel an emptiness when I watch a show . . . or a movie with DeForest. . . .
